L&P Nail Enhancements (Liquid & Powder or Acrylic Nails)
First and Foremost let's dispell the myth that 'false nails' damage or ruin your natural nails, stick on false nails from the chemist can damage your own nails, however professionally applied nail extensions or enhancements should not cause any damage. But a bad nail tech, poor products or not following aftercare advice could result in damage to the natural nail.
Acrylic Nails are designed to 'bond' to the natural nail and they will if applied and looked after properly, and will stay put until they are removed, unless you bite, chew or pry them off, then you will damage the nail plate, as not only will you pull the nail away, you will also lose layers of the nail plate too. If at any time you notice lifting on your enhancements, knock or trap one and lift it, then dont worry, have the nail seen to by a nail tech as soon as possible, to avoid further damage or infection. It's much easier to repair a broken or lifted nail than wait for a natural nail to grow back after you've tried to remove the nail yourself and caused untold damage.
If you are not used to wearing extensions, then it's a good idea to start with them short and get used to using your hands differently, which you will , dont use your nails to open doors, pry lids off etc, try to use the pads of your fingers instead. use your nails as 'jewels' not 'tools'. Avoid contact with harsh chemicals or having your hands in water for extended periods of time, if possible wear rubber gloves especially when doing the dishes.
Regular Maintenance is a must to keep the nails in tip top condition, your nails will need infills and or rebalancing every 2-3 weeks, for nail biters or clients with damaged nails then weekly appointments will be of benefit for the first few months, using cuticle oil daily will keep the nails looking good and help keep them supple, follow the aftercare advice given and you should have no problems.
Certain tanning creams/sprays can give extensions a yellow appearance, UV rays from the sun and sunbeds can also cause discolouration to the nails. There are special topcoats which can help prevent this.
